Erie to Welcome Basketball and Powerlifting Championships this Weekend

Erie is set to host the Men’s and Women’s National Club Basketball Association National Championships and the Great Lakes Powerlifting Championships this weekend.

The National Club Basketball Association will host its National Championships Friday-Sunday. The men’s tournament will take place at Hagerty Family Events Center. The women’s tournament will be at Mercyhurst University Athletic Center’s Owen McCormick Court. The three-day event will be single elimination until a 2024 National Champion is crowned. Schools competing include, but are not limited to, UCLA, Miami, Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Nevada, and Boston College. Preliminary round games will be played on Friday, starting at noon at each venue. Saturday semi-finals tip off at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. With the Championship games being played on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Mercyhurst University and 1 p.m. at Hagerty Family Events Center.

“The versatility of Erie is on display this weekend,” said Erie Sports Commission Executive Director Mark Jeanneret. “Erie is an ideal city for all. Hosting events at the national, regional, and local levels this weekend continues to prove that.”

The Great Lakes Powerlifting Championships will take place Saturday-Sunday at Sinai Sports. Powerlifting is an individual strength sport testing maximal strength. Athletes will lift as much weight as possible for Squat, Bench, and Deadlift, in addition to team rosters of 10. Women, Lightweights (up to 181 lb.), and youth groups will take place on Saturday and heavyweights (198 lb. and up) will occur on Sunday.

“We are eagerly awaiting the 2024 Great Lakes Powerlifting Championships! Each year, the competitors raise the bar and display impressive strength, perseverance, and a strong sense of community,” said Diane Lewis, Meet Director of the Great Lakes Powerlifting Championships.

Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. and lifting will begin at 9 a.m. on both days. The event will run in the following order: Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, and Awards. The top four places will be awarded in the Open Powerlifting event and the top three places for all other events. Based on turnout, outstanding lifter awards will be given too.

Spectators can purchase a $10 one-day pass or $15 two-day pass.
