Erie Cancer Wellness Center to Host Inaugural Duathlon Sept. 24

ECWC Press Conference Katie and Kregg Heenan Sarah Humphrey

Erie, Pa: The Erie Cancer Wellness Center (ECWC) held a press conference Tuesday to announce details for its upcoming Duathlon event scheduled for Sunday, September 24, at Pleasant Ridge Park in Fairview.

The Duathlon’s start, finish and transition areas will be located at Pleasant Ridge Park, with the event beginning at 9 a.m. The event will consist of a 5K run, 20K bike ride and another 5K run, and participants can either register as an individual or as a team. Registration for the event is open now on runsignup.com.

“We are excited to offer a challenging but achievable duathlon in Erie, and Pleasant Ridge Park is the perfect location for the event,” ECWC Executive Director Sarah Humphrey said. “We’re thankful for the support we’ve received so far, and we can’t wait to host everyone in September for a fun event that supports a good cause.”

Details were announced by Humphrey and Race Director Kregg Heenan at the Erie Cancer Wellness Center, with dignitaries including Erie Mayor Joe Schember in attendance. The duathlon will benefit the ECWC, which offers non-medical services to those experiencing a cancer diagnosis, as well as their support system. The ECWC hopes to raise $25,000 from sponsors and registrations through the event.

“We know that Erie has an appetite for a duathlon, and getting to support the efforts of Sarah, Kregg and the Erie Cancer Wellness Center team is a great bonus,” Erie Sports Commission Executive Director Mark Jeanneret said. “Whether it’s a fun run, marathon, duathlon or triathlon, Erie has the scenic backdrops and public support to put on a great event.”

The ECWC is an independent, local, and privately funded organization, not affiliated with any hospital organization. These services are provided to participants at no cost and rely on donations from Erie and surrounding area community members.
