The Presque Isle Scallywags’ second annual “Gun Dog” Dan Ruck’s ALS 7’s Rugby Tournament is taking place on Saturday at the Mellon Veterans Outreach and Wellness Center, the former Mercyhurst North East campus. The tournament starts at 10 a.m. and check-in for teams will be at 9:30 a.m. Eight men’s and women’s teams are registered for the tournament and will be competing from Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Greensburg, Akron, Buffalo and Erie.

Half of the proceeds raised from registration, raffles, tournament t-shirt sales and other merchandise will be donated to The ALS Association, honoring rugby alum, “Gun Dog” Dan Wingerter, as he battles ALS.

"Dan Wingerter has been a pillar in the Erie rugby community for years, spearheading many of the charity and social events for the team during his prime,” said Vice President of the Presque Isle Scallywags, Mike Verga. “Some of us have known him for as long as he's been here and some of us have only had the honor of meeting him more recently. What we do know is that rugby in Erie wouldn't be what it is today without him and so it is our duty to honor that and give back to him now."

The Presque Isle Scallywags is a grassroots rugby club based in Erie, Pennsylvania, with a rich history spanning over five decades. The Scallywags work closely with The ALS Association and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital Erie to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. The Scallywags welcome ruggers of all skill levels. Its mission is to expand the joy of rugby throughout Erie and its surrounding areas, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can participate.
